Mama Glow invites you to their event

Mama Glow Webinar Series - Sexual Health Education: Empowerment through Knowledge

About this event

Get access to the sexual health education that you (probably) never received in school. In this five-part webinar series, you will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the most essential topics related to sexuality and sexual health. Our goal is to equip you with this knowledge so that you are able to make more informed decisions about your bodies and your relationships. We further encourage you to “share the wealth” and educate others with the information you have learned from this series.

These conversations will be led by Mama Glow Foundation fellows Alex Ivanchev and Delena Alemayehu.

Alex Ivanchev (he/him) is a rising junior at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He is passionate about sexual health advocacy, which stems from his initial role as a peer educator at his local Planned Parenthood in Florida. He currently co-leads organizations on Brown’s campus focusing on sexual health awareness and facilitates sex education workshops to high school students in Providence.

Delena Alemayehu (she/her) is a rising senior at Brown University. She majors in Africana Studies, and uses this framework to explore how people with varying identities experience different health outcomes. She looks forward to destigmatizing conversations about sex, and she hopes to offer the youth with the tools and resources they need to have agency over their bodies and health.

Below is a brief overview of the format and structure of this series:

Lesson 1 (July 17): Gender, Sex & Sexuality

What does it really mean when someone talks about sex and gender? This foundational lesson will give participants concrete definitions for these terms and discern the difference between them. Additionally, participants will develop a greater awareness about how our identities influence the way we view and express gender.

Lesson 2 (July 24): Reproductive Anatomy & Physiology

This part does what?! This lesson gives an overview of the different reproductive organs for assigned males and females at birth, as well as their purposes. We learn that all bodies are different and that this difference is normal. The processes of menstruation and sperm production are also explained.

Lesson 3 (July 31): Pregnancy, Contraception & Abortion

The processes of fertilization and pregnancy are demystified in this lesson. Participants will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, as well as the different options people have once they become pregnant. Birth control methods and abortion are also covered in length.

Lesson 4 (August 7): STIs, HIV & Stigma

This lesson provides the opportunity to reflect on how stigma influences the way society perceives sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While they may seem scary, STIs are common, treatable, and many are also curable. We also provide tips on how to communicate STI status with a sexual partner.

Lesson 5 (August 14): Relationships, Communication & Pleasure

Humans develop different types of relationships throughout their life course as a way to experience pleasure. This lesson gives insight into the characteristics of relationships that make them (un)healthy. We also delve into the concept of consent and how to communicate this with other people.
