Aspects of Liver Disease in Small Animals

About this event

The liver has many functions in metabolism and liver disease can manifest subtly as well as overtly. This talk will aim to pull out essential criteria in evaluating a patient with liver disease , both for supportive care as well as treatment purposes. 

About our speaker

Dr Liesel van der Merwe BVSc, MMedVet(Med)

Dr Liesel vd Merwe qualified at Onderstepoort in 1992 and spent 4 years in small animal practice in Johannesburg and several months in the UK, before returning to the Faculty as a resident in Small Animal Medicine.  She became a lecturer in 1999 and obtained her MMedVet in Small Animal Medicine in 2005. She was involved in the expansion of the Onderstepoort Animal Blood Bank and establishment of a research focus in canine spirocercosis at the Faculty. She has published in local and international journals and was editor of the local veterinary CPD magazine, VET 360, from 2014 to 2022. In 2010 she left academia and teaching for a stint in private practice. Returning to Onderstepoort in 2017 she is now primarily a clinician in the Outpatients section as well working in the Small Animal Medicine Referral clinic.

    Liesel van der Merwe Senior Lecturer: Small Animal Internal Medicine (Outpatients) @ University of Pretoria

    Dr van der Merwe rejoined the Department in 2017 after a seven year stint in private practice. She is now responsible for the clinical training of veterinary and para-veterinary undergraduate students in the outpatient clinic of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. She currently has six publications in peer-reviewed journals.
