About this event
Welcome to Season 4 of The State of Craft! This season is all about conversations that lead to cannabis policy reforms that allow craft cannabis producers in Canada to thrive. What are the policies that are barring this possibility today? Read our white paper: The Dire State of Craft Cannabis in Canada. It serves as the framework for the current season.
The second episode of season 4 features a pair of nurses who have had decades of experience with Canadian health care and who have worked extensively with cannabis in professional medical contexts. We're so excited to welcome Kala Sanmartin and Kirk Nyquist to have a discussion on cannabis stigma as it relates to nursing and patient care! Stigma, in our belief, is the root cause of all the challenges that we're facing in our industry (read the first section of the white paper for more). Learning how to transform deeply held societal perceptions of cannabis is paramount to creating an environment where producers aren't shackled by policies. Health care is one of the areas most affected by stigma (see "Cannabis' Regulation" section of the white paper that dives deep into Health Canada's history with cannabis), so it's critical to learn from health care professionals who deeply understand both the system they operate within and the ways in which cannabis stigma shows up in Canadian health care.
For all these reasons, we're so stoked to welcome these brilliant, caring, passionate nurses. Their bios are below.
Kala Sanmartin, BScN, CCHCNC is an RN with 13 years of practice experience, mostly in the emergency room with some time spent clinical instructing and in community care. Eight years ago, cannabis entered her life bringing her freedom from her debilitating insomnia. A passion was ignited to learn about cannabis and teach others about the potential healing power of this plant. She partnered up with her lifelong friend, Heather Wilkinson, to create The Cannabis Nurses + Co. Their practice is now providing holistic cannabis nursing services and endocannabinoid system support coast to coast in Canada. Their practice offerings include public speaking, group education and 1:1 holistic cannabis nursing support. Kala is also passionate about educating other nurses. In collaboration with the Canadian Institute of Integrative Nursing Development and Education (The CIINDE), she created a first of its kind accredited Holistic Cannabis Nurse Program in Canada. This program was designed to empower nurses to hold space, provide holistic care and advocate for individuals who are interested in incorporating cannabis into their lifelong healing journeys.
Kirk Nyquist, RN, BSN, MA is a self-employed nurse. In this capacity, Kirk applies his unique skills and understanding to those projects that bring him joy. His long career expresses both an academic and practical understanding of health systems and the access to cannabis as medicine. As the co-owner of Reefer Medness - The Podcast, Kirk gathers knowledge from scientists, researchers, prescribers, users, sellers, and growers, he then shares his learning by applying cannabis to nursing practice across generations. He explores plant medicine in a measured and professional manner. His professional belief is personal wellness is always defined by the individual. Chasing down cannabis stories has become another passion.
The State of Craft is a video podcast series focused on the legal craft cannabis industry presented by CertiCraft.
The rollout of cannabis legalization in Canada has been full of ups and downs. The craft cannabis industry in particular has been immensely affected by a myriad of challenges and missteps in the years following the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations.
In The State of Craft, Sami Majadla, CEO of CertiCraft, facilitates conversations with leaders in the legal craft cannabis industry to explore what is going well and what is going not so well. We'll discuss what can realistically be changed at different levels of government and industry alike to address major issues the craft cannabis sector is facing, and hopefully inspire stimulating ideas of all sorts. Every episode ends with a 15-minute live Q&A with our audience.
