Abstract

Metal nanowires present extraordinary physical properties when their diameters are reduced to atomic scale. The formation and stabilization mechanism are crucial factors to the fabrication of the atomic metal nanowires, but still not clear to us. To understand the growth and stability of atomic metal wires, characterization is a great challenge.

During this webinar, Dr. Xi Liu will present the fabrication of atomic sliver wires (ASWs) via self-assembly techniques. Using our Climate system, Xi was able to visualize the atomic rearrangement of ASWs, examining the structural evolution of Ag NPs supported on α-MnO2 and annealed under N2 or O2 atmosphere. He will show that the results from in situ TEM and synchrotron characterization reveal that the formation of ASWs is due to the immigration of Ag atoms driven by molecular oxygen when annealing.
