ASPI Publication Launch: Japan’s security strategy

About this event

ASPI is delighted to invite you to join us for the launch of the report ‘Japan’s security strategy’, which explores the increased military threats and challenges facing Japan, in particular from its near neighbours in Northeast Asia.

Japan is facing national security challenges and increased expectations of its role in international affairs not experienced since the end of World War II. These challenges range from China’s aggression in the maritime and cyber domains to the constant threats posed by North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile proliferation to increased expectations of military support to counter Russia’s illegal war.

Japanese policymakers are cognisant of the rapid developments in relation to technological competition, regional arms build-ups and elevated activities in the space and cyber security domains, with ‘grey zone’ operations or ‘hybrid warfare’ flowing from such developments.

At this event, His Excellency Mr Shingo Yamagami will present an opening address, which will be followed by a panel discussion with Senior ASPI Non-Resident Fellow and report author, Dr Thomas Wilkins and Professor Rikki Kersten from ANU, moderated by ASPI’s Bec Shrimpton. Panellists will discuss Japan’s relationship with Australia, the security challenges Japan is facing and how Japan is responding to these challenges.

Please note this is a hybrid event with the option to attend in-person or online.
