New York’s parks, playgrounds, and open spaces have experienced record usage in recent years and have become even more vital to the health of New Yorkers and more critical to the city’s economic future. But for years if not decades, New York City has struggled to provide sufficient funding for its parks. Addressing this chronic funding shortfall, even as the city faces steep budget deficits, will require new dedicated revenue streams for the city’s parks.

This policy forum explored the opportunity to generate sustainable, recurring funding for New York’s parks and open spaces. It delved into the specific revenue ideas put forward in the Center for an Urban Future’s recent report, Paying for the Growing Needs of NYC’s Parks, and discussed other steps city policymakers can take to expand and strengthen New York’s green spaces.

Speakers included:

  • Meera Joshi, New York City Deputy Mayor for Operations
  • Sue Donoghue, New York City Parks Commissioner
  • Shekar Krishnan, New York City Council Member; Chair, Committee on Parks & Recreation
  • Adam Ganser, Executive Director, New Yorkers for Parks
  • Heather Lubov, Executive Director, City Parks Foundation
  • Morgan Monaco, President, Prospect Park Alliance
  • Christopher Rizzo, Director, Environmental Practice Group, Carter Ledyard & Milburn; Advisor, Van Cortlandt Park Alliance
  • Julie Tighe, President, New York League of Conservation Voters
