About this event

Fostering Hope through Solutions-Oriented Climate Change Engagement: A PLACCE (Plants and Climate Change Education) Conversation

Guest presenter: Jen Kretser, Director of Climate Initiatives - The Wild Center

About this session: What can it look like to create climate change engagement opportunities that shift away from a focus on describing the problem of climate change, and instead, toward a focus on recognizing that solutions are already underway? The Wild Center, a science museum located in the heart of New York State's Adirondack Park, offers programming and exhibitions designed to change the dialogue about climate change from hopeless to hopeful. Informed by social science and touched by human stories, the museum offers examples from people thinking about new ways to mitigate our own everyday impact and encourage change in society at large.  Since 2009, the Wild Center's global Youth Climate Program has reached thousands of young people around the world through convening youth climate summits. Climate Solutions is a new 3,000 square foot interactive and multimedia exhibition profiling regional boots-on-the-ground people from across sectors, generations, and backgrounds who are building a web of climate solutions. This session will provide an overview of a variety of climate change education programs and public engagement approaches, as well as ideas, tools and tips on how to connect with different audiences including youth, members of the public, and special groups such as municipal and community leaders.

About PLACCE Conversations: PLACCE (Plants and Climate Change Education) is a peer learning group exploring how botanic gardens and arboreta can maximize the impact of a plant-centered climate change education niche. We are dedicated to learning together; creating and testing plant-centered climate change education models; and sharing new understandings, resources, and best practices across the public gardens community. PLACCE Conversations are online professional development opportunities open to education professionals from botanic gardens and arboreta interested in plant-centered climate change education.
