Cotton in India: History, Modern Uses, and Beyond (Online Lecture)

About this event

Cotton fabrics from the Indian Sub-continent were coveted trade goods as far back as the 1st century AD. Cotton weaving reached its pinnacle in Dhaka in present day Bangladesh with its renowned diaphanous muslins. Join Karthika for a brief global overview of the use of several cotton cultivar fibers in various ancient cultures. See examples of fine cottons; learn about artisans in South India who continue to grow, spin, and weave cottons; and examine the pros, cons, and environmental issues surrounding cotton.
