Teulo Ed / Enhancing Indoor Environmental Quality and Fire Door Protection (P1)

About this event

10am - 11am | Dyann Stewart | Technoform

Synopsis: Enhancing Indoor Environmental Quality: Façade Strategies for Comfort, Acoustics & Healthy Buildings in New Zealand Conditions: This presentation explores how window and façade design influence indoor environmental quality (IEQ), with a focus on thermal comfort, condensation control, acoustics, and occupant wellbeing. Attendees will gain practical insights into how thermal breaks, airtight detailing, glazing systems, and installation practices work together to create healthier, more comfortable buildings. Using New Zealand-specific challenges and examples, the session demonstrates how better perimeter design can improve occupant outcomes, reduce heating reliance, and support more usable indoor spaces

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between façade performance and occupant comfort, including the impact of surface temperatures, radiant asymmetry, draughts, and condensation risk.
  • Identify practical design and detailing strategies that improve thermal performance, condensation resistance, airtightness, and acoustic performance around windows and façade interfaces.
  • Evaluate how improved perimeter performance contributes to healthier, more usable and energy-efficient buildings, supporting better indoor environmental quality outcomes for education, residential, and commercial projects.

11am - 12pm: Alex Holly | Omega Windows and Doors

This session explores the key considerations for residential window and door design, from light to medium-density housing, with a focus on ventilation, thermal performance, aesthetics and practical specification.

We will examine different window configurations and recent suite developments designed specifically for cost-effective medium-density housing (MDH), alongside the importance of specifying window systems that are tested and engineered to meet site-specific conditions.

Drawing on real-world examples, Omega will share practical solutions to recent detailing challenges and Requests for Information (RFIs), highlighting emerging issues and how these can be addressed through effective design and specification.

The session will also explore the relationship between passive window ventilation and mechanical ventilation systems, strategies for minimising summer solar heat gain through glazing selection, window placement and building orientation, and the role of thermally broken aluminium systems in creating resilient, energy-efficient building envelopes.

Key Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Residential Window Design: Understand how to design and specify windows and doors for residential and medium-density housing projects.
  • Testing and Engineering: Identify the testing, engineering and performance requirements for window systems in different site conditions.
  • Solar Heat Gain: Apply effective glazing selection, window placement and orientation strategies to manage solar heat gain and improve occupant comfort.
  • Thermal Performance: Understand how thermally broken aluminium window systems contribute to resilient, energy-efficient building envelopes in both summer and winter.
  • Practical Detailing Solutions: Recognise common and emerging detailing challenges and explore practical solutions for non-standard window installations.
  • Ventilation Strategies: Understand how passive window ventilation can work alongside mechanical systems to support healthy indoor environments.
