About this event
Māngere is a place of special significance both in terms of the natural environment and the rich diversity of people and communities. It was originally a flourishing food bowl on the edge of the Manukau, supporting many communities. However after decades of colonisation, physical development and industry the ecosystem has been degraded, much of the original gardens and natural landscapes have disappeared, many people face food insecurity and deep economic and social challenges. There is a ground swell of leadership emerging from Mana Whenua and Māori and community-based organisations to actively work together to regenerate our Māngere – in a way that can sustain the people and Papatūānuku.
This Whakaora session will introduce the Mauri Ora Compass and share stories of local Māngere leadership - nga awa (streams), manaakitanga food regenerosity and urban ngahere (forests). Join us to hear about re-connection and transformation and help us contemplate how we might think differently, amplify the life force of Māngere and leverage a thriving future for all from our projects across Tāmaki.
