Tackle inbreeding depression with heterosis - ProCROSS crossbreeding as a solution

About this event

In this free webinar you will learn:

  • Inbreeding depression and its consequences
  • What is heterosis?
  • Benefits of the structured crossbreeding system
  • The key strategies for an optimal crossbreeding plan

Amy Hazel Loeschke PhD, ProCROSS Product Consultant, will walk you through inbreeding depression and heterosis (hybrid vigour) and their effects on dairy herd profitability. You will learn why crossbreeding in dairy cattle is more relevant today than ever. Find out how you can take full advantage of heterosis by implementing a structured crossbreeding system.

Time: Wednesday, September 28th, 19:00-20:00 (BST)

Amy works at ProCROSS Company and Creative Genetics of California to identify new ways how ProCROSS enhances profit and improves the sustainability of dairy farms.

Amy worked as a researcher at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and was the first author of a 10-year, designed crossbreeding experiment in Minnesota commercial dairy herds.

What is ProCROSS? 🐄

ProCROSS is a three-breed rotational crossbreeding system combining VikingHolstein, VikingRed and Coopex Montbéliarde.

One of the great benefits of crossbreeding is heterosis i.e. hybrid vigour—the increase of favourable characteristics of a hybrid organism over those characteristics of its parents. Heterosis happens when you cross two unrelated breeds. It's the opposite of inbreeding.

Research has found that heterosis especially improves traits like:

  • Vitality
  • Fertility
  • Health
  • Survival

Crossbred cows stay longer in your herd with an increased lifetime production. Read more about ProCROSS.
