On 1st October 2025, France’s landmark environmental cost labelling program, informally known as the “Eco-Score”, came into effect, marking a major shift in how product impacts are communicated to consumers.
Companies like yours will be permitted to voluntarily calculate the environmental cost of their clothing products. The methodology is based on the EU’s PEF Category Rules for Apparel & Footwear, but includes many French distinctions, including the exclusion of footwear.
From 1st October 2026, the stakes get even higher. Anyone will be permitted to calculate the environmental cost of your company’s products, and communicate those scores publicly, based on minimum data and worst-case assumptions. This provides an incentive to calculate the scores of your products yourself, as a self-calculated score has preemptive effect over third-party versions when it comes to public display.
While the score is mostly voluntary, if your company is already disclosing environmental data in some way, you will be required to display the Eco-Score alongside it.
