She specializes in complex international disputes, focusing on public international law, human rights, investment arbitration, and risk management. Meriam has extensive experience as counsel, arbitrator, and negotiator across sectors like mining, infrastructure, oil and gas, and textiles. She represents clients worldwide, including the Americas, Middle East, Africa, and Europe, participating in arbitrations before ICSID, ICJ, PCA, ICC, and LCIA. Her work includes post-conflict negotiations, war crimes investigations, and advising states and corporations on business and human rights. She has documented Rohingya atrocities, supported reforms against economic violence in Latin America, promoted accountability for election-related violence in Kenya, and advised on transitional justice in Syria and Libya.
Utilizing her experience in the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutors’ Office, Ms. Fukuhara’s main practice area is corporate crisis management and global investigations. She specializes in representing companies and individuals in complex cross-border investigations involving domestic and foreign regulatory authorities. Further, she has advised many companies about business and human rights (BHR) as well as supporting establishing an effective compliance system regarding personal information and trade secrets, anti-corruption, and other matters. She is a committee member of Anti-Bribery Committee Japan (ABCJ). She has been selected as one of the 40 outstanding legal professionals under the age of 40 in the ALB Asia 40 under 40 2023 and has been ranked Number 2 by Nikkei’s Best Performing Lawyers Survey in Business and Human Rights in 2023, by both client and peer vote.
