About this event
Thunderstorms are among the most hazardous weather events, causing numerous human and material damages daily worldwide. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) reports that in South Africa on average 260 fatalities occur each year due to thunderstorms and lightning, along with significant losses in animals and livestock. The financial impact of lightning-related property damage in the country is estimated to amount to millions of rands annually.
To better understand this phenomenon and reduce associated risks, the SAWS established the South African Lightning Detection Network (SALDN) in 2006, employing the most advanced detection technology available to cover the entire country. Recently, SAWS formed a partnership with the French company METEORAGE, a leader in lightning detection since 1987, which has developed specialized solutions to address a wide range of related needs.
