In this webinar, TechnipFMC’s Brian Woods and Daniel Mabily will cover two unique technologies for addressing leak detection, how they operate and ways to optimise them in a multilayer configuration as part of a pipeline integrity solution.
Pipelines are subject to numerous threats including third party damage, corrosion, mechanical failure of pumps and valves, land movement, and illegal tapping. These threats may lead to uncontrolled releases of products. The impact on human life and the environment can be significant. The pipeline operator’s public image can be damaged with non-negligible economic or political consequences. Our leak detection solutions have been developed to minimize the consequence of leaks from onshore and offshore pipelines.
PipeLIDS - PipeLIDS uses acoustic technology to detect the noise generated by impacts or leaks. This noise propagates in both directions over long distances inside the pipeline. Intrusive acoustic sensors are installed regularly on the pipeline (every ten kilometers) to detect this noise. Each sensor is connected to an intelligent beacon with GPS synchronization. By measuring the sound wave’s amplitude and phase time shift and analyzing the acoustic signature, PipeLIDS detects the origin and location of the event and raises an alarm.
LeakNet™ - LeakNet’s PPA algorithm uses Negative Pressure Wave Detection to identify the leak expansion wave as it travels along the pipeline. PPA’s optional Locator module identifies the location of the leak. LeakNet’s MassPack algorithm uses Modified Mass Balance to track unaccounted inventory over time, and identify the presence of a leak. LeakNet™ is compatible with industry standard pressure and flow instrumentation.

With a background in Computer Science, Brian has served as the subject matter expert and development lead for the LeakNet™ leak detection system since 2000. He has extensive experience in leak detection applications for liquids and gases in onshore and offshore installations.
A specialist in data acquisition and analysis in acoustic and vibration domains with more than 20 years of software and management experience in the oil & gas industry. He is also an expert in leak and shock detection systems with several site assessments and installations.
