Blind Spots in Electric Motors: Contactless Torque, Temperature and Vibration Sensing with MicroWire

About this event

Most motors are instrumented around what is easy to measure, not what matters most for performance and reliability. Rotating components, shaft loads, and the difference between mechanical and electromagnetic vibration are still largely unmeasured. This session shows how RVmagnetics’ MicroWire sensing makes these four signals accessible without contact, extra shaft mass, or constraints on your design.

Temperature: Finding Hot Spots Before They Become Failures

  • Contactless temperature measurement on rotating motor components, where overheating often starts and is hardest to observe
  • Other approaches typically need slip rings or wired contact, which adds complexity and limits use on rotating parts

Position & Vibration: Mechanical Health Without the Bulk

  • Distinguishes magnetic and mechanical vibrations, a combination other sensors don’t offer together
  • Monitors mechanical behavior, including vibration and shocks
  • Also detects unexpected electromagnetic behavior that purely mechanical sensors can’t see

Torque: The Measurement Most Motors Are Missing

  • Ultra-thin (diameter ca. 20–70 µm) MicroWire enables contactless torque sensing
  • Adds almost zero weight to the shaft and has no influence on moment of inertia
  • Works with any shaft material, so sensing doesn’t dictate your shaft design

Putting It Together: A Complete Motor Health Picture (Motor Smartification)

  • Multiple MicroWires can be combined within a single sensing system to capture several physical quantities at once
  • Temperature, vibration, position, and torque together give a full picture of motor health
  • Turns a conventional motor into a “smart” motor that reports on its own condition
