Small Biz Pro Tip: AB 5 and worker classification for childcare providers and employers

About this event

On January 1, a new state employment law (AB 5) went into effect that reclassifies some independent contractors as employees. The line between independent contractor and employee can be especially confusing when it comes to in-home childcare providers.

Join Start Small Think Big! and Small Business Majority for our Small Biz Pro Tip Series where we offer free legal expertise to growing business owners in California. Facilitated by a lawyer, we will discuss the implications of AB 5 and how it may or may not impact your small business. We will also discuss the difference between employees and independent contractors and the importance of classifying your workforce during COVID-19 with special attention paid to child care providers and domestic employers.

Topics of discussion include:

  • State policy update on Proposition 22
  • How to use the "ABC" test to determine how a worker should be classified
  • How your employees are classified and what it means for your business
  • Benefits to offer your workforce without impact to your bottom line

A 30 minute question and answer period with an attorney will follow the discussion.

Start Small Think Big! and Small Business Majority have teamed up to design a legal workshop series called Small Biz Pro Tip, a free workshop series facilitated by lawyers and small business policy experts, designed for California small business owners that are expanding on or improving upon their business and need access to guidance from employment, tax and labor attorneys.
