How aFRR, Europe’s new merchant revenue opportunity for energy storage, can appeal to investors

About this event

Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR, formerly known as “secondary reserve”) is finally opening up to energy storage in most European countries. The PICASSO project to establish a European platform for exchanging balancing energy for aFRR will start opening up the market as early as this summer in some countries. This new opportunity comes at the right time for storage, as FCR (or “primary reserve”) prices have been decreasing to levels that have disappointed some investors.

In this webinar, Clean Horizon’s CEO Michael Salomon will:

  • Level the playing field on aFRR, beginning with a summary of and update on the PICASSO project, giving expected timelines for the deployment of aFRR across the continent
  • Share the latest known elements regarding the features of future aFRR products
  • Dwell on aspects that remain unknown and could have a strong impact on future prices

Then, as Clean Horizon has already started working in partnership with leading independent power producers (IPPs) across Europe on aFRR projects, he will share some of their strategies for designing and optimising projects which rely on this nascent market — even though some of its characteristics remain unknown during the design phase.

We will then welcome Paula Travesso, a principal on the investment team at Gore Street Capital, which has been one of the leading investors in Great Britain, the largest market in the region, will share their experience in addressing storage projects which rely heavily on merchant ancillary services revenues.

Through this webinar, experts from Clean Horizon and Gore Street Capital will try to draw a path for European investors and IPPs active on the continent who are looking to successfully finance merchant storage projects. The challenge — and the opportunity — will be to make their projects benefit from existing markets as well as the emerging and promising revenue lines represented by aFRR.
