Steel packaging lightweighting: the next breakthrough by ArcelorMittal in sustainability and performance

About this event

Reducing steel usage per packaging unit has long been a strategic challenge—one that is now more critical than ever, as thinner steel means greater sustainability, lower carbon intensity, and alignment with the PPWR packaging reduction target. ArcelorMittal is deeply committed to supporting its customers in this transition, leveraging advanced Finite Element Analysis expertise and a broad portfolio of high strength steels.

This presentation will explore various lightweighting scenarios across multiple applications, highlighting recent achievements for components such as the easy-open end, the aerosol bottom, and the deep-drawn can. Additionally, we will provide insights into the metallurgical strategies that ensure lighter steel packaging maintains its integrity. The discussion will emphasise the importance of accurate forming laws that replicate real-life conditions in computerised modelling.

Speakers Laura Rigoni and Gilles Mangin, from ArcelorMittal Global R&D, will share their expertise on steel packaging lightweighting and demonstrate how ArcelorMittal’s innovations can support the tinplate canmaking and filling industry—from initial concept to full industrial implementation.
