During this illuminating lecture, botanist W. John Kress will discuss his new book, Smithsonian Trees of North America. Ten years in the making, this comprehensive compendium takes a careful look at the diversity, morphology, and beauty of over 325 tree species. Dr. Kress will discuss the extensive research behind the book and the advanced technologies used to identify individual tree species and understand their evolutionary relationships. Join us to gain a deeper appreciation for some of the most prominent and ecologically vital plants in North America.

W. John Kress, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Scientist and Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and former interim Under Secretary for Science at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Kress received his education at Harvard University and Duke University where he studied tropical biology, ethnobotany, evolution, and ecology. He is a taxonomic specialist on the tropical Zingiberales, which includes heliconia, ginger, and banana. His books include Plant Conservation – A Natural History Approach, The Ornaments of Life – Coevolution and Conservation in the Tropics, and, most recently, Smithsonian Trees of North America.
