In 2021 a total of 1 685 fatalities were recorded over the festive period, which is an astonishing 14% increase on the previous period.
The main causes of the road fatalities during this period were:
- jaywalking
- speeding
- wet or slippery road surfaces
- overtaking across barrier lines, and
- poor visibility.

As a I am an easy going gentleman.
Eugene is the CEO of a multifaceted training company. He started his career in the motoring industry and is now owner of a risk management company and a seasoned motoring journalist. Over the years he gained a wealth of insight into vehicles and drivers, which he used to establish his company, Risk Administrative Consultants which evolved into a dedicated, multifaceted training company carrying the brand MasterDrive.
Paolo Cravero is the Senior Officer, Communication, Membership and Project Support at the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP)—an organization hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). He has over 10 years of experience working globally in the humanitarian and development sectors focusing on partnership building, project development and management, and communication. His background is in Political Science, International Relations, and Global Public Health.
Dr Lee Randall is an experienced occupational therapist and an advocate for road ethics and road safety. In 2019 she obtained her PhD in Bioethics and Health Law from University of the Witwatersrand, Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics. She is the founder of the Road Ethics Project non-profit company, aimed at engaging people as ethical agents and bringing to the surface the unconscious ethical reasoning processes we use in the road traffic system. This includes fostering the Vision Zero philosophy, offering training on the Safe System model of road safety and providing thought leadership in relation to mass transit modes like the minibus taxi industry and scholar transport sector.
Phillip Hull is a long-time supporter of road safety at large and as such is a founder member of the Road Safety Foundation of South Africa (2007), also a Founder member of The Road Safety Collective (2013) Van Reenen’s project on the N3. Phillip and his crew selflessly spend every long weekend at Van Reenen’s and have done so for the last 40 years - the N3 is one of the most heavily trafficked roads and this service has contributed in no small measure to a positive outcome where motorists have been involved in a crash. As a Qualified ILS Paramedic Phillip serves to assist with other medical matters and did so during the height of the pandemic. The MD Fleet Safety Awards, a new initiative of MasterDrive, named the award given to a company who displayed an exemplary record for living road safety was named after him – “The Phillip Hull Road Safety Steering Award"
