PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This lecture explores alternative strategies for managing acute diarrhea in small animal patients without relying on antibiotics such as metronidazole. With growing concerns about antimicrobila resistance and the self-limiting nature of acute diarrhea, this session will focus on supportive care, dietary managements, microbiome-friendly therapies, and client communication. Attendees will gain practical tools to confidently manage cases while aligning with current antimicrobial stewardship principles.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Learn more about the impact of antibiotics on the gastrointestinal microbiota
• Discuss the role of dietary interventions, including highly digestible and fiber-enriched diets.
• Evaluate the evidence for and against the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation.
• Develop strategies for client communication regarding pets with acute diarrhea
