How can you compensate for the escalating feed cost, fertilizers and energy? Feed costs represent up to 88% of the variable costs on a dairy farm. It’s important to consider all options to help reduce these high costs. One perfect tool for doing so is the efficient use of genetics.

Jan Lassen, PhD, Senior Project Manager at VikingGenetics, will walk you through breeding for improved feed efficiency and the effects on dairy herd profitability. You will learn why breeding for improved feed efficiency is relevant today and what requirements you should consider when selecting a reliable feed efficiency index.

What is Saved Feed Index?

The Saved Feed Index shows you how efficient a cow is in turning feed into milk. The index is based on data from the Cattle Feed Intake System (CFIT), a system where 3D cameras monitor and measure the feed intake in the cows’ natural environment over their lifetime.

Data is collected throughout lactation on cows from commercial herds – without disturbing the daily routines and cows’ natural behaviour.

Meet the speaker

Jan Lassen, PhD, Senior Project Manager at VikingGenetics

Jan grew up on a dairy farm and obtained a master's degree from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2003. He earned his Ph.D. from the same University in 2007.

He worked for nine years at Aarhus University on the genetics of methane and feed efficiency before joining VikingGenetics in 2016. He oversees the project for the development of the Cattle Feed Intake System (CFIT).

This project records individual feed intake on milking cows with the aim to increase the number of cows in the breeding value estimation.
