About this event
Event will be moderated and presented in Spanish!!
Otitis externa is one of the most common clinical problems seen in small animal practice, and it is one of the most challenging conditions to manage long-term. This presentation will provide a review of the diagnostic approach and management of otitis in dogs, with an emphasis on preventing recurrent and chronic ear disease. Attendees will first revisit the anatomy and physiology of the canine ear and learn how structural and breed-related differences influence susceptibility to otitis. A systematic diagnostic approach will be outlined, including otoscopic techniques, cytology, and when to consider culture and susceptibility testing.
The lecture will then address the “three P’s” of otitis—primary causes, perpetuating causes and predisposing factors—highlighting how each contributes to the clinical picture and impacts treatment outcomes. Special attention will be given to allergic skin disease as the most common primary cause, as well as challenging presentations such as Pseudomonas infections, otitis media, and end-stage ears. Therapeutic strategies will be discussed, including ear cleaning, topical options and systemic therapies. Finally, the importance of client education and communication will be emphasized, ensuring pet owners understand the need for identifying and addressing underlying causes, adhering to treatment plans, and implementing preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
