Leadership in Transition: Board Governance During CEO & Founder Change

About this event

A Chief Executive or Founder transition is one of the most consequential moments in a nonprofit’s life cycle. It can bring uncertainty, emotion, and disruption, but it can also be a powerful inflection point for clarity and growth.

While the board carries the formal governance responsibility during a leadership transition, it is often the senior team, administrators, and operational leaders who must keep the organization steady. Programs must continue. Staff need reassurance. Donors expect confidence. And governance must remain strong without drifting into confusion or overreach.

So what does healthy board leadership look like during a transition?

How do executives and administrators support strong governance while still executing the day-to-day work?

And how do you prevent a temporary leadership gap from becoming a long-term organizational setback?

Join board governance expert Jenny Bergman, Senior Consultant at Benefactor Group, and executive search aficionado Adam Fazio, Partner & Vice President at Benefactor Group, for a candid and practical conversation designed specifically for CEOs and nonprofit administrators navigating leadership change.

Drawing from real-world governance consulting and executive search experience, this session will explore:

  • The board’s essential role during a Chief Executive/Founder transition
  • How to maintain governance stability while avoiding role confusion
  • Communicating with staff, donors, and stakeholders during uncertainty
  • Aligning board expectations, operational realities, and search strategy
  • Turning transition from disruption into strategic opportunity
  • The power and potential of intentional interim leadership

Whether you are preparing for a planned retirement, responding to an unexpected departure, or simply building a stronger succession framework for the future, this webinar will equip you with the tools and clarity to keep governance steady and operations moving. Transitions don’t have to derail progress. With the right alignment between board and staff leadership, progress can continue.
