Marine Collections at Iziko South African Museum

Iziko’s marine biodiversity collections represent nearly 200 years of primary biodiversity information and knowledge. In this talk, we provide you with an overview of the collections, with a brief glimpse into the exciting research taking place here and the new facilities available to the wider scientific community.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS

DYLAN CLARKE

Dylan is a Curator at Iziko museums of South Africa, focused on marine fish. His interest in fish peaked while employed at Marine and Coastal Management (now Branch: Fisheries in the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) as a scientist responsible for research on the large pelagic fisheries (e.g. Tuna and Swordfish), which informed decision-making on commercial and recreational quotas.

His research areas include; Ecology and systematics of segmented marine worms (polychaetes), particularly those found along the southern and western African coasts as well as Taxonomy and systematics of marine fishes.

JYOTHI KARA

Jyothi is the assistance curator for the Iziko Museums of South Africa. She is an experienced Postdoctoral Researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in DNA Sequencing, Microscopy, Evolutionary Biology, Scientific Writing, and Molecular Biology. Strong research professional with a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD focused in Zoology from Stellenbosch University and a SACNASP registered Professional Natural Scientist!

She is passionate about marine invertebrates, taxonomy, systematics and marine evolution.
