SAVETCON invites you to their event

Live Export by Sea

About this event

Live export for slaughter by sea is a contentious ethical, animal welfare and economic issue, which was unanimously not supported by the entire South African industry until earlier this year. Although this remains the view of the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA), we recognises the prospect that this may continue. SAVA has collaborated with Australian experts in the field to provide an educational webinar to better help prepare South African vets about these issues.

We will cover: The life of a vet during (before and after) the voyage; the practical and regulatory aspects of monitoring health and welfare, and the handling of problems encountered during the voyage.

Proposed Programme:

  • 09:30 - Welcome & Introduction
  • 09:35 - Findings of the SA assessment for live transport by sea (1995) - Dr Rudolph Bigalke
  • 09:40 - Overview of the Australian industry over the past four decades - Dr Lynn Simpson
  • 09:50 - Session by vets in the Australian Department of Agriculture - Dr Carol Sheridan
  • 10:00 - Session by vets that accompanied consignments (Australian authorised vets) - Dr Renee Willis
